Rotarians at Work

Join the Point Loma Rotary Club for a morning of community service at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park on Saturday, April 26, 2025. This hands-on event is a chance to give back to our beautiful coastal environment while connecting with neighbors and fellow volunteers.

Event Details:

  • Time: 9:00 AM (no later than 9:30 AM) to 11:30 AM
  • Location: South end of the Ladera Street parking lot, accessible via Sunset Cliffs Blvd. (from Point Loma Ave.) or Cornish Dr. (from Hill St.)
  • Lunch: Complimentary sandwich lunch provided by Chick-fil-A

What to Expect:

  • Volunteers will work on various improvement projects across the 50-acre Hillside Section of the park, including:
  • Pruning overgrown non-native acacia trees near the bridge at Cretaceous Canyon.
  • Removing invasive Castor Bean plants below the lower parking lot of Point Loma Nazarene University’s Young Hall and treating stems to prevent regrowth.
  • Pulling ice plant and Crown Daisies from designated areas.
  • Planting native species in new locations.
  • Removing dead shrubs and hunting for Russian Thistle (tumbleweed) shoots.
  • Rebuilding basins around newer plants to support growth.
  • Installing small signs to remind visitors to keep dogs on leashes, protecting local wildlife like the threatened Coastal California Gnatcatcher.
  • An Open House will run concurrently, offering information about the park and guided tours for those interested in learning more about this cherished local treasure. Special note: David Kimball’s grandson, whose family helped establish the park’s 3-acre Demonstration Garden over 20 years ago, will join us from London and UCSD.

What to Bring:

  • Gloves that fit (tools will be provided).
  • Long pants and closed-toe shoes (no open-toe shoes or shorts).
  • Sunscreen for protection.
  • Water, orange slices, and energy bars will be available, and a limited number of Rotarians at Work (RAW) shirts will be distributed based on a Friday count.

Why It Matters:

This event continues the legacy of community-driven efforts to preserve Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, a vital habitat for native plants and wildlife. Come lend a hand, enjoy a morning outdoors, and make a lasting impact on Ocean Beach’s natural beauty.
